What Should You Know Before Choosing A Memorial?

We understand that losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things one has to deal with, especially when you don’t receive the much-needed closure.

Over the years, in our experience as reputable headstone makers, we have developed the opinion that one of the best ways to cherish and remember a life well-lived is through the incorporation of a headstone into the final resting place of your loved one.

At Summit Memorials, that is what we strive to provide you with. In addition to helping you design a monument that depicts the life your loved one spent, we also ensure that the monuments will last for a lifetime. We provide a written guarantee that states that the granite will never crack or deteriorate from exposure to the elements. It also states that the lettering and design will remain legible for all time. The best part is that there is no time limit on the guarantee and no deductible.

Thanks to our seamless operations and the easy process that we have devised for our customers, choosing a memorial is not complicated. However, we do understand that everything seems difficult when you are grieving. Hence, to help you understand the process in a better way, we have curated this blog detailing the factors that you should know before choosing a memorial.

Size And Customization

Before jumping to deciding the size of the headstone, it is imperative that you decide the kind of customization you want. However, if you have something specific in mind in terms of customization, make sure you consult a professional headstone maker to ensure that the size you are choosing will not adversely affect the design you have in mind.

In addition to this, the size also depends on whether the marker is for one or two people? Do you want full dates of birth and death or just the years on the headstone? Do you want a picture to go on the marker? What kind of design and how big is the design that you want on the marker?

Make sure you answer all these questions before choosing the size of the headstone.

Style

The next step is deciding on the type of headstone. This solely depends on the type of customization you want and the size of headstone that you have chosen.

The three commonly used headstone types are:

  • Flat marker
  • Pillow marker
  • Upright marker

Flat markers are generally less expensive but they are installed at ground level so they can only be viewed when you are standing over them. Pillow markers are installed on a base that protects the marker so it will sit up a bit higher and you can see the family name on the front or the back of the marker. The face of the pillow is sloped so you can see the information from farther back as well.

Upright markers, on the other hand, are the most common because you can see all the information on the marker better than on the previous two, even in the winter months. As the name suggests, they are placed upright and stand on a base.

Installation

Depending on the size of the grave marker the installation time and requirements will vary. Some people choose to install the markers themselves but this affects the durability since neither the right tools are used nor the right method.

This is especially true for pillow monuments and upright monuments. These markers are heavier and require a certain level of expertise. Moreover, many installations will require a foundation to be placed under the monument unless the cemetery has a “strip” which looks like a long sidewalk that the monuments are placed on.
