Upright Monuments Vs Flat Markers - Which One Is A Better Option?

When we talk about monuments, most people automatically start thinking about tombstones. However, there are several different types of monuments that you can choose from, the most common ones are Flat Markers and Upright Monuments.

When it comes to choosing a monument for a loved one, many people don’t understand the difference between flat markers and upright monuments which is why they usually ask which one is better or more suitable.

The answer to this is that each type of monument has its own pros and cons. Hence, the one that is best for you will depend on what you are looking for.

Flat Markers

These are usually made of granite or bronze and are either placed flush on the ground or placed flat on a foundation. They can be used for a single grave or for multiple graves. As compared to upright monuments, they are less expensive due to their smaller size.

However, since they are placed against the ground, you cannot see what is written on them from a distance. You have to be standing near the monument to read it.

Upright Monuments

These are typically made of granite but can be made from other materials as well such as marble and stainless steel. As the name suggests, these monuments stand upright on a foundation.

They are placed on a base for stability and to help protect the monument from debris when the grass around the grave is cut.

Price Difference

As mentioned, flat markers are generally less expensive than upright monuments since they require less material and labor for engraving. However, the price varies based on the size, color, and accessories you choose for the monument.

Upright monuments are typically more expensive than flat markers as they use more granite and usually include a base to rest on. Size, color, and accessories all factor into the cost of upright monuments like flat markers.

Design And Accessories

Upright monuments have more space for lettering, design, and accessories compared to flat markers. In addition to this, by spending a little extra money, you can also include lettering and design on the back of the upright monument. This means that choosing an upright monument will double the amount of space you will have to engrave your loved one’s monument. Typically an upright monument is larger in size than a flat marker.

The most notable difference between the two is their line of sight. With flat markers, you have to be standing directly over them to see the information on the marker whereas, on an upright monument, you can read the information from some distance easily. This also plays an important role in the winter season. If there is snow on the ground, you will not be able to see the flat marker while you will still be able to see the upright monument.

The type of monument you end up choosing will depend on your requirements and budget. If you don’t want to add a lot of text, design, and accessories to the monument and you have less of a budget to work with, then a flat marker will work well. On the other hand, if budget is less of a concern and you want something more impactful and memorable, choosing an upright monument is a better option for you.
